Dear GoodJoan,
I'm cleaning house as part of my new years resolution and I want to have a yard sale to get rid of all these things. Any suggestions?

I am a big fan of the Flylady's stand on yard sales and garage sales. By trying to stockpile all that stuff until you have enough for a 'good' yard sale you care just continuing to surround yourself with clutter. Also, I think that by trying to sort out what is “good enough to sell” and what is “good enough to donate” and what is simply trash, you are giving the clutter more importance that it deserves and assigning it value that it doesn't really have. If you do end up getting together enough stuff to sell, you have to sit there all morning with your prized possessions while strangers paw and poke at it, point out all the flaws, and then ask if you'll take a dime for the Waterford crystal vase that your Aunt Fifi gave you.

Save yourself the stress and call a local charity and offer them up whatever sized boxes or bags you have right now. Call again when you have another small pile. They may even come and get it from you! You can know the items will be used to benefit a cause you like, and you can take a tax deduction for what you feel is a reasonable value of the items. A $10 tax deduction on the not-quite-your-style framed art piece that your mother in law gave you is better in the long run than selling it for 50 cents at a yard sale. Save the receipts from the charity for tax time!

If you are in the Atlanta area, the AADD will come and pick up your donations. You can either call them or go to the website and schedule a pick up.
