Remember me:

Dear GoodJoan,
How do I get my baby to nap!?! He's over a year and still fights naps and wants to be put down asleep rather than awake for nap(s).

GoodJoan Says
I have to admit, I am the wrong person to ask about sleeping! I had one child that slept Great and 3 that slept like, well, like babies! Whoever suggested that "sleeping like a baby" was a good thing should be slapped! All of my kids co-slept for some part of their life. My really great sleeper actually didn't sleep well with us so he moved to a crib around 3-4 months and slept better there. He was also the only one that took a regular nap! The other kids were usually nursed to naptime in my bed or in their crib that set up as a sidecar to my bed and then I'd try to wriggle away and get up, or they grabbed naps in the car while I was running carpool. They really didn't start going to bed and staying in bed at night until they were 2.5-3 years old and rational enough to understand what was expected of them. There are several books available that deal with nighttime issues and sleep in general. They usually all into 2 categories, the "controlled crying" or "cry-it-out camp" and the "learn to live with it and co-sleep" camp. There is one book, "The No Cry Sleep Solution" that tries to take a more middle of the road approach between the two and has worked well with many moms I know that don't want to cry it out but also really need some sleep! Prior to that book hitting the shelves, I decided with one of my kids that daddy had to start dealing with bedtime because I was really worn out and exhausted by that time and just didn't have the patience to calmly settle him to sleep. Daddy did a great job and not only did the child go to sleep, he slept all night! I wish I could be more help but this is one area I admit I am far from well versed!
