Dear GoodJoan,
Do you have a favorite recipe for play dough?

GoodJoan Says
No, I just buy the commercial stuff in the party size cans, at the dollar store, or when it's on sale. In my house play dough is a one-time use thing. By the time the kids are done playing all the colors are mixed up, bits of it are dried in the carpet and the tops are lost forever. Rather than trying to find all the lids and sort the 300 different shades back into 4 cans, we just save any little bits of artwork and let them air dry, and pitch the rest. The next time they get a hankering for play dough we just break out some new cans. The dollar store is also a great place to get cookie cutters and cooking tools that the kids can use with the dough. Around the holiday I will sometimes make cinnamon dough (equal parts cinnamon and apple sauce, mix and knead well, keep cold) and let the kids make cookie cutter ornaments by rolling it thin, cutting out a shape and making a little hole near the top for some ribbon and then letting them dry on a rack for a few days. They are wonderfully aromatic, especially on a Christmas tree, near the warm lights. We don't try to keep them though as they can get moldy after while.
